Description
This talk explores the connection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) principles and GNOME’s Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) from the dual perspective of an app developer and an HCI researcher. I’ll discuss how HCI insights can inform GNOME app design and provide practical ideas for applying these principles to future projects, using my ongoing app development experience as context.

| Talk Description | Designing applications that are both usable and consistent with GNOME’s ecosystem requires understanding both HCI principles and the GNOME HIG. In this talk, I’ll explore the intersection of HCI and GNOME HIG from the perspective of an app developer and HCI researcher. I’ll discuss key HCI concepts relevant to application design, how they align with GNOME’s HIG, and how this intersection can guide developers in building more accessible and user-friendly apps. Using my ongoing app development experience as context, I will illustrate how HCI-informed thinking can influence layout, interaction patterns, and usability considerations; without needing a finalized product. |
| Author(s) Bio | I'm an undergraduate GNOME app developer and HCI researcher exploring how design principles can improve application usability. I'm currently developing a Sudoku app that has reached 3,000+ installs on Flathub and is on track to join the GNOME Circle. My HCI paper is under review at CHI 2026. |
