Description
In this talk you will know as from attendee to GNOME Nepal Instructor how I boost participation and students to GNOME and FLOSS. How as an active instructor, I developed the course "Linux and System Administration: From Beginner to Advanced,’ which helps new comers to learn best practice for successful engaging in GNOME development projects. Also provide orientation that how by conducting the few workshops and cloning sessions we have achieved to make more active members and promoting the open-source contributions.
This session will explain how to begin using GNOME and dispel some common myths regarding contribution in general and technical contribution in particular. I will encourage the attendees to accept and support the FLOSS through emphasizing the stability, resilience against cyber threats, and security features of the software products. It will include tools, resources, guidelines, and prospects for any developer at the GNOME initiative – rookies and veterans alike.

Talk Description | In this talk, I will share my journey from attendee to GNOME Nepal Instructor, beside that how I encourage the new comers and the students to contribute to the GNOME and related FLOSS. In GNOME Nepal, I am an active instructor helping students by giving them session on "Linux and GNOME", developed and delivered course titled "Linux and System Administration: From Beginner to Advance" open for everyone. It has equipped new contributors with essential skills to contribute confidently in GNOME projects, fostering long-term involvement. Through workshops and mentoring, the number of active contributors increased and engaged in collaborative environment for open-source development in our community. I will discuss how to get started with GNOME its environment and encourage the attendees that Linux and Open-source is not only old tty or terminal based by showing the flavor of GNOME GUI/Desktop customisation. I will clear the misconception of contribution, i.e how one can contribute to FLOSS and GNOME; technically and non-technically both from contributing to code and documentation to engaging with the community. In this session I encourage the attendees to use and support FLOSS by explaining how reliable, robust, and secure it is. The session will cover the tools, resources, and best practices for new contributors, along with the opportunities available within GNOME for both beginners and experienced developers. I hope to inspire and guide others in navigating GNOME and open-source software. Outline: 1. Introduction: Share how I started with GNOME, from being Window user to Linux user. Discuss the first steps in contributing as GNOME Nepal Instructor. 2. Learning Curve: Highlight the skills that the attendees should develop along the programming, i.e. documentation, project management, collaboration and how to navigate that skill within GNOME and FLOSS. 3. Opportunities for Contributors: Break down the various ways and level of contributions that one can contribute either technically (coding, bug fixing), or non-technically( documentation, translations). 4. Best Practices: Share practical advice on getting started by including the best tools, resources, and communities that can be endorsed. 5. Q&A: Open up for questions, encourage those who are interested to join GNOME but need clarification and advice. This topic is focused in non-technical, community engagement and growth. |
